Here in Greece, we’re still deep in the Lenten season, a 49-day period before Easter and a time of spiritual and physical cleansing. It’s a great time to reset, cleanse, and clarify intentions for the year. It also happens to be a great time to get back to the roots of the Mediterranean diet. Interestingly, some of the most delicious Greek foods are cooked during this time.

If dessert can be healthy, halva would win the top prize. Halva Semigdalenios, or Semolina Halva, is one of the most traditional Greek desserts and it's often served during periods of fasting because it contains no dairy. Indeed, it's a traditional vegan desssert before Greeks even knew they had a great selection of vegan recipes in the traditional kitchen! ...

Here in Greece, we’re just about to enter into the Lenten season. Greek Orthodox Lent starts with Clean Monday, on February 27th this year, and will last right up until Easter, on Sunday, April 16. For the entire 40 days, those who follow the fast abstain from all animal products and fish but not seafood, which is what I am focusing on today! The strictest practitioners abstain even from olive oil on specific days each week and from alcohol.

Since today is Valentine’s Day, I’m encouraging you to stay healthy in the name of love – not only for the love of yourself, but also the love of others. And this means yes, enjoy a dessert, but avoid going down the processed pastry and chocolate routes. Instead, opt for a heart-healthy Mediterranean diet recipe, one that is packed with ...

When the weather turns cold, I start looking for ways to create delicious, hearty, warming soups with Greek pantry items and classic Greek ingredients. The good news is, it’s easy to do! You might think of Greece as a year-round warm weather destination, but the Mediterranean diet is actually chock-full of many excellent soups that are sure to keep you warm in the coldest weather.

After visiting a mussel farmer off the coast of Thessaloniki, I fully understood the deliciousness of this otherwise common mollusk. Mussels are amazing! It’s no wonder this classic Northern Greek recipe for mussel pilaf is such an icon of Thessaloniki’s rich food history. And that history, in turn, is the very reason why Greece’s second largest city is its ...

Orzo is an essential Mediterranean diet ingredient, at least in Greek cooking, and in Season 4 of My Greek Table, I use it to create this dish. We call it kritharaki, which means little barley, because of its shape, which resembles barley kernels. I serve this delicious Greek orzo recipe with a spiced roasted chicken . The orzo is cooked uniquely – not your typical boiled pasta with ...

Everyone loves a great roasted chicken, and this is a My Greek Table recipe standout! In the Greek diet and Mediterranean diet, roasted chicken is often a Sunday meal. But it’s also easy enough to prepare for a midweek feast, as I did as a thank you to a friend who walked me around my new Athens neighborhood, explaining ...

It’s summer in Greece. Imagine you’ve been at the beach, lounging in the sand, sneaking in a few swims, and relaxing, listening only to the sounds of your friends, family, and the sea for the past few hours. And at the end of the day, you find yourself sitting at a seaside Greek taverna, the sun sinking into the sea. The table is full of fresh, delicious seafood - and of course, that means a few Greek recipes for shrimp! The Greek diet and Mediterranean diet both overflow with great shrimp recipes.

CHAI TEA 101 The traditional ingredients of a chai tea blend usually include black tea mixed with strong spices, like cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger and black peppercorns. The spiced tea mixture is typically brewed strong with milk and sweetened with sugar or honey. As traditional chai beverages can vary from town-to-town and family-to-family, there is no one recipe that ...

Holy Week is right around the corner here in Greece! Holy Week, or as Greeks call it, “Megali Evdomada,” marks the week from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, and it also indicates the beginning of the end of the Lenten season . It’s also the last chance to enjoy some of my personal favorite Greek dishes – recipes that showcase some of ...
