Spanakorizo, or spinach rice, is one of the great Greek-diet plant-based main courses! It speaks the language of a perfect Mediterranean diet recipe because it has all the right components: extra virgin Greek olive oil, greens, in this case spinach, a grain (rice), and a vibrant, fresh flavor profile thanks to the addition of ouzo, which I like to ...

This yummy recipe for Mushroom Mageiritsa is a vegetarian version of the classic Greek recipe for Easter soup. Mageiritsa, which comes from the Greek word “cook, or to cook,” essentially is an offal soup, using all the innards that otherwise would be tossed. It’s a way to use everything, the Greek version of nose to tail cooking. In this ...

When you think about Greek Easter, I’m sure I can guess the first recipe you think of: lamb, right? I don’t blame you! For many, the cliched images of Greek lamb on a spit are conjured along with any conversation about Greece, and maybe during any time of year, but especially in the springtime. While this is now the most popular way to roast lamb, it’s really more of a mainland tradition than an island one; in reality, preparations for lamb abound, and you don’t need a spit to whip up a delicious Greek lamb recipe.

Here in Greece, we’re still deep in the Lenten season, a 49-day period before Easter and a time of spiritual and physical cleansing. It’s a great time to reset, cleanse, and clarify intentions for the year. It also happens to be a great time to get back to the roots of the Mediterranean diet. Interestingly, some of the most delicious Greek foods are cooked during this time.

I am constantly on the hunt for recipes that check certain boxes. They have to be versatile, healthy, and (sometimes) quick and easy. If they can include lots of healthy Greek and Mediterranean diet ingredients - well, that’s even better!

When I get hungry in the middle of the day, there are so many Mediterranean diet lunches I depend on. There are great salads , of course, and a number of soups that come together in a flash. There are also tons of sandwiches – the ones I make always lean on my favorite Greek ingredients too! But perhaps nothing makes a more satisfying lunch than ...

So by now, you probably know all about the Mediterranean Diet. It’s something I’ve talked about…well, pretty much every chance I get! This diet is about certain types of recipes, of course, but crucially, it’s also a mindset that can help you consume healthier foods that are good for your body and mind.

Many recipe roads lead to a great taramosalata, arguably the best-known Greek dip and one of the great Greek meze recipes! I have a few different recipes for taramosalata, the fish roe spread that is a Lenten classic but also eaten throughout the year as a meze, on this very site. The secret to all of them is to ...

In Greek cooking, vegetables tend to reign supreme, and while I certainly don’t play favorites, there are some that have become pantry staples and necessary components of essential recipes. The onion is one of them, a vital element to so much Greek cooking. They’re grown all over the world, and are related to chives, garlic, leeks, scallions, and shallots - some of the greatest ingredients for adding flavor to any dish!

The Greek diet is packed with tasty, healthy greens. And while kale might be a newcomer to the Greek salad genre, it’s really taken root. You’ll find it nowadays in farmers markets all around the country, and it’s made its way into a number of salads and grain-based dishes. It’s not surprising, since this crunchy member of the brassica family taps into Greeks’ love with all things cabbage – they’re related, of course!

A Greek salad can be many things, and this arugula salad is a delicious cool weather treat, especially when winter squashes are in season. You can swap out the butternut for calabasa or delicata, or any other yellow squash of your liking. Experiment! You can also swap out the greens. This would be equally delicious with baby spinach. Using ...

I’m diligently working on my holiday menu these days, and while there will, of course, be plenty of vegetarian side dishes (that can double as mains in many cases), this is the time of year when the protagonist of the meal is meat. Traditionally, Greeks eat either turkey, rooster, or pork on Christmas – and on Ikaria, the preference towards pork is especially ...
