One of the greatest parts of dining in Greece is the tradition of meze, also known as tapas, antipasto, merende, and even hors d’oeuvres. They’re small, savory plates of food enjoyed in a convivial atmosphere, and they make up a whole pan-Mediterranean culture: that of sharing food and drink with friends in an unrushed, unharried environment. The word “meze” itself ...

Lots of people ask me if I can suggest a weekly Mediterranean diet or Ikarian diet meal plan, and while I don’t have something per se, mostly because I am not a dietician (and therefore think more like a cook), I can certainly offer up a few tips and ideas for adding variety to your weekly recipe roster, all in ...

When spring rolls around, and new produce starts to pop up in my garden, one of my favorite recipes to whip up is a pasta salad. It’s so endlessly versatile because, well, what doesn’t pair well with pasta? The classic deli salad bar illustrates this perfectly. Everything there goes beautifully on top of pasta - even other salads! - and it ends up being a great, starchy way to fill up. It’s also great cold, warm, or at room temperature, making it the ultimate picnic food.

When you think about Greek Easter, I’m sure I can guess the first recipe you think of: lamb, right? I don’t blame you! For many, the cliched images of Greek lamb on a spit are conjured along with any conversation about Greece, and maybe during any time of year, but especially in the springtime. While this is now the most popular way to roast lamb, it’s really more of a mainland tradition than an island one; in reality, preparations for lamb abound, and you don’t need a spit to whip up a delicious Greek lamb recipe.

Here in Greece, we’re still deep in the Lenten season, a 49-day period before Easter and a time of spiritual and physical cleansing. It’s a great time to reset, cleanse, and clarify intentions for the year. It also happens to be a great time to get back to the roots of the Mediterranean diet. Interestingly, some of the most delicious Greek foods are cooked during this time.

Are you a breakfast person? For me, breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. A filling, healthy breakfast sets me up for a great day! To eat breakfast jump-starts your metabolism, so you burn more calories throughout the day; it also sets you up with the energy you need to focus on work, school, or whatever you’re ...

So by now, you probably know all about the Mediterranean Diet. It’s something I’ve talked about…well, pretty much every chance I get! This diet is about certain types of recipes, of course, but crucially, it’s also a mindset that can help you consume healthier foods that are good for your body and mind.

Here in Greece, we’re just about to enter into the Lenten season. Greek Orthodox Lent starts with Clean Monday, on February 27th this year, and will last right up until Easter, on Sunday, April 16. For the entire 40 days, those who follow the fast abstain from all animal products and fish but not seafood, which is what I am focusing on today! The strictest practitioners abstain even from olive oil on specific days each week and from alcohol.

What could be more versatile than a potato? Greek potato recipes span the gamut of just about every cooking method. Whether baked, boiled, roasted, pan-seared, air-fried or fried (in EVOO!), there are countless ways to cook and enjoy a potato in the Greek diet. And when combined with great Greek and Mediterranean diet ingredients, they become even more enjoyable. Oregano, lemon, extra virgin Greek olive oil - all of these and more work perfectly in potato recipes.

Giant beans make the perfect base for a Greek salad that aims to be both light and filling. Giant beans are called gigantes in Greek. This salad has all the important Mediterranean diet ingredients you need, from plant-based protein like beans, to delicious colors and flavors from the fresh vegetables, to olive, capers, and of course extra virgin Greek ...

The Greek diet is packed with tasty, healthy greens. And while kale might be a newcomer to the Greek salad genre, it’s really taken root. You’ll find it nowadays in farmers markets all around the country, and it’s made its way into a number of salads and grain-based dishes. It’s not surprising, since this crunchy member of the brassica family taps into Greeks’ love with all things cabbage – they’re related, of course!

Who is ready for some healthy eating? I know I am. The holiday season was full of divine indulgences and delicious dishes, not to mention plenty of time spent in the kitchen working on Christmas and New Year’s menus! And, of course, I love this, but there are times where I want something quick, healthy, and easy that will keep me going through the day.
