“Mom, can you make a lemon cake ?” this is a refrain I hear pretty often in our house, as my son, 14 and hungry just about every 20 minutes, has had a sweet tooth since he first tasted ice cream, still in the stroller, around the age of 1. I never aimed to curb it. Instead, I taught my kids to ...

Greek pancakes? It seems like a stretch, but truth be told, pancakes exist in many regional variations in the Greek kitchen and are very old, traditional Greek recipes. As a working mom I’ve used these traditional Greek recipes to offer up quick, nutritious meals to my own kids. Greek-style pancakes offer up a relatively healthy alternative to the fat-, sugar-, ...

Ikarian cooking in the middle of the 20th century is what most of the island's nonagenarians remember vividly. They were the stone-hard years of the Occupation, a time of great hunger all over Greece. Tourlou is typically a mixed summer vegetable casserole found all over the Eastern Aegean. The word is Turkish (turlu) and means a hodgepodge. There are many similar casseroles around Greece that go by different names. What I like about this old Ikarian recipe is its utter simplicity. It also reminds me of a similar recipe with pumpkin, not zucchini, also ...

I am so thrilled and honored. IKARIA, my latest book, has been nominated for three awards this year: It’s a nominee for the “Books for a Better Life Award,” by the MS Foundation; it’s been long-listed on the Art of Eating Book of the Year award; and, most recently, IKARIA is up for an IACP award in the International Category . I think this is a sign. People are really interested in living better, simpler lives and ...

This is one of my all-time favorite Greek pies, from the Blue Zone island of Ikaria, where we run our cooking school in spring and summer. We teach our guests to make this and they love it.
