STREET FOOD SNACKS in ATHENS…can mean anything from a flaky phyllo cheese pie to fresh fruit from countless street stands!
Athens is an amazing food city and home to some of the best street snacks in the world. Today’s missive is devoted to a few of my personal favorites, plus one “snack” — dolmades — that make for one of the most iconic Greek recipes.
On the streets of Athens, you can find everything from koulouria, the famous sesame bread rings sold on many street corners to great lahmatzoun, if you want something international (it’s delish), to goat’s milk ice cream and great souvlaki; from roasted chestnuts and grilled corn to great neighborhood outdoor produce markets (Laikes), coconut confections and salepi, the viscous nutritious brew made from ground hyacinth bulbs! Yes! And, no visit to the city is complete without a walk through the bustling central market. Indeed, this time of the year, as people get ready for Easter, it’s pretty graphic (and always fascinating)! I’ve served up a little video today of some of my favorite places to eat in the market.
In Athens overall, you’ll find treat after treat that can be either indulgent or healthy, great examples like hand-held vegetable and cheese pies, that are the best examples of the Mediterranean Diet on the go.
If you plan to visit the city at all in the near future, take a day to taste your way around.
Eat well and enjoy,
Diane
